Is The Popular Greenhouse Ideal For Crop Production In Africa?

Greenhouse crop production is a technology that farmers in Africa are gradually using, particularly in countries like Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya. They come in various forms and designs. The metal type, though expensive, is more common than the wooden type.

The greenhouse is one of the efficient ways to produce healthy crops.

The questions for discussions are on the bases of Affordability, Climatic conditions and Expertise or Education in crop production.

1. Affordability

Let us consider the cost of an average-sized greenhouse (10 x 24m). This size costs GHC40,000.00 (approximately $7,000.00).

  • Is this affordable to the average farmer in Africa?
  • Could it be more affordable?

2. Suitability to climate

This should be based on experience with greenhouses under your climatic conditions. Some designs introduced are reported to retain heat, and thus, not good for crops under hot and humid climatic conditions.

  • Do you have such experience?
  • Do you think it is solely due to design? And that there could be a suitable design?

3. Adequate education in Greenhouse production

We are aware of the potential.

  • Does the farmer have enough experts in the technology?
  • Is the farmer getting enough education on greenhouses for crop production in Africa?
